TURA, Oct. 18: A food and handicraft festival featuring local delicacies, traditional crafts and cultural performances marked the beginning of Durga Puja festivities in Garo Hills on Saturday, drawing residents to Tura Parade Ground.
Organised by the Central Puja Committee (CPC), Garo Hills, the Food & Handicraft Festival 2026 brought together vendors, artisans and visitors for a celebration of the region’s cultural diversity and community spirit.
Around 30 stalls offered a range of food, including traditional Garo delicacies, sweets and popular street food. Artisans showcased handmade products, traditional textiles, bamboo crafts and other locally sourced items.
The festival also had a charitable component, with the committee distributing 200 new clothes to underprivileged people and elderly women.
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal attended the event as chief guest, along with CPC president Prabin Panthi and other committee members.
Addressing the gathering, Aggarwal said community festivals helped strengthen social bonds, promote local entrepreneurship and showcase the region’s artistic heritage.
Describing Tura as a place where people from different tribes and religious communities live together, he urged residents to preserve peace and harmony and avoid animosity.
The celebrations featured music and traditional dance performances, followed by a Dandiya session in the evening that drew participants of different age groups.
The organisers thanked the district administration, vendors, performers and residents for supporting the festival, expressing hope that it would grow in scale and attract larger crowds in the coming years.
