Colombo, Oct. 16 (Daily Mirror) - The United States today announced a US$17 million investment to digitise operations at the Port of Colombo, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce delays and costs in maritime trade.
The project, to be implemented in partnership with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), will introduce new digital systems to streamline port operations and strengthen Sri Lanka’s role in global trade.
The US-funded initiative will support the development of two interconnected systems: a Maritime Single Window and a Port Community System.
The systems are expected to reduce paperwork, improve coordination and accelerate cargo processing by enabling shipping companies, Customs officials, immigration authorities, port operators and businesses to exchange information electronically.
The initiative aims to replace paperwork-based procedures and disconnected processes that can slow down port operations and increase shipping costs.
According to the US announcement, the investment will also support American businesses, strengthen US supply chains and expand commercial opportunities between the United States and Sri Lanka.
