The Bangladesh Army has exchanged fire with a “armed group” in Rangamati’s popular tourist spot Sajek, after two local organisations blockaded the area and stranded tourists.
The shooting began around 11:30am on Thursday near Ujo Bazar, according to police.
The situation returned to normal about an hour later, Sajek Police chief Toffazzal Hossain told bdnews24.com.
Blockaders had stopped tourists in the area this morning, and law enforcers tried to bring the situation under control, he said.
“At one point, the armed group, the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), opened fire at law enforcers. The army then returned fire. There was gunfire for some time.”
Tourists were safely brought out of Sajek once the situation calmed, the officer said.
Asked about the incident, a spokesperson for the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate said: “There was an exchange of fire with the Army to bring the situation under control.”
