Shillong, Oct 16: Meghalaya’s Shillong Lajong FC will face hosts Sikkim Aakraman SC in the final of the 42nd Governor’s Gold Cup at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok at 5 pm on Friday, aiming to secure a historic title.
A victory would make Lajong only the second club from the Northeast to win the prestigious tournament, following NorthEast United FC’s triumph in 2024.
Lajong secured their place in the final with a 5–4 penalty shootout victory over local side Singling SC on Wednesday after a goalless draw in regulation time. The Meghalaya outfit had earlier defeated Black Eagle (Sikkim Police) 3–1 in the quarterfinals.
Despite a demanding schedule of three matches in six days and a long road journey from Shillong to Gangtok, head coach Birendra Thapa and captain Kenstar Kharshong have expressed confidence in the team’s readiness for the final.
Lajong’s squad combines Northeastern talent with two Brazilian recruits, giving the side additional options as they prepare for the decisive clash.
Sikkim Aakraman, meanwhile, will look to capitalise on home advantage and become only the second home team in the tournament’s 42 editions to keep the trophy in Sikkim. The hosts reached the final with dramatic stoppage-time victories over Gokulam Kerala FC and East Bengal FC’s reserve team.
With a strong turnout expected at Paljor Stadium, Lajong will look to overcome the home crowd and a determined opponent to bring the Governor’s Gold Cup back to Meghalaya.
