Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr made a blunt admission about the team’s plan of building around Stephen Curry in the twilight of his career.
The Warriors look miles away from being a realistic contender in the NBA, barely improving their roster over the summer after missing the 2026 NBA Playoffs due to an injury crisis.
Their status as potential bottom-feeders in the NBA this season looks even more certain after a 127-105 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2026-27 season opener. Unfortunately, it does not look like any help is coming.
Steve Kerr confirms Warriors will not endanger their future to help Steph Curry now
In a detailed conversation with The Ringer’s Logan Murdock, Kerr bluntly discussed why expectations that the Warriors would trade away their entire future to help Curry make another title run now make no sense.
“Do we throw away our entire future to build around a 39-year-old Steph? He turns 39 in March, right? Does it make sense now to throw away all those picks? Hell no… It makes no sense.”
Kerr explained the rationale behind this thought process earlier in the interview, realistically balancing a future where they have to compete against top contenders without Curry and then also not having any assets to adjust to that reality for a short-term move.
“Look, I would argue we have tried to do that here with Steph, with our roster. It’s really hard. And we have made several monster offers to teams for some of the big fish, and we didn’t get those guys. And then you better draw the line somewhere. Our fan base might have been thrilled if we had traded five firsts and two of our better players for one of the big fish. They might have been happy for a year, and they might have been miserable for the next decade if it backfired.”
“You have to look at where everybody is right now—our whole roster and also the rest of the league. Do you really want to trade your entire future right now when you’re looking at San Antonio and OKC and what they’ve built? That’s Mike’s job. The front office’s job is to see the big picture. The fan’s job is to see the next game. The coach’s job is to see the next game. Somebody has to look out long term. And so we have tried to thread that needle. We’ve tried to do everything we could.”
Kerr also admitted that Curry himself is understanding of this mindset and is unlikely to pressure the front office into making any moves, although it’s with the understanding that he will be displeased if the team is struggling.
Curry put up 23 points against the Lakers in the season-opener, running out of steam as the game wore on after a hot start with 16 points in the first quarter.
There was no reliable second option to lighten the offensive load on Curry, which is going to be a problem the entire season until Jimmy Butler returns from his torn ACL.
