Kathmandu, Oct. 13: The government is set to procure 15,000 tonnes of paddy worth Rs. 675 million in the current fiscal year 2026/27.
Following coordination between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, preparations are underway to procure paddy at the minimum support prices fixed for the current fiscal year before the Tihar festival.
According to Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment, the government plans to procure 15,000 tonnes of paddy before upcoming Tihar festival at the minimum support prices determined by the Ministry of Agriculture on a scientific basis.
For the fiscal year 2026/27, the minimum support price for paddy has been fixed at Rs. 3,660 per quintal for coarse paddy and Rs. 3,860 per quintal for medium-grade paddy.
Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary has been coordinating with the concerned agencies to ensure the effective implementation of the paddy procurement scheme at the minimum support price.
The initiative aims to ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their produce while helping maintain price stability in the market.
Chief of the Procurement Department of the Food Management and Trading Company Limited (FMTC), Ananta Raj Poudel, said that the company would begin procuring paddy before the Tihar festival, as directed by the government.
“We will purchase paddy from farmers at more than 13 locations across the country. The FMTC will set up procurement depots to make it easier for farmers to sell their produce,” he told The Rising Nepal.
According to Poudel, the company will begin procurement in areas where harvesting has started and gradually expand the process to other areas as harvesting progresses.
He said that the company would establish procurement depots in coordination with local governments to facilitate farmers in selling their produce.
