Canada bounced back from consecutive defeats to beat China 3-2 at the Sultan of Johor Cup, leaving their opponents winless after three matches.
IPOH: Canada returned to winning ways after two consecutive defeats, edging China 3-2 in the 14th Sultan of Johor Cup International U-21 Hockey Tournament at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru today.
The Canadians had previously lost to Pakistan and Japan, while China suffered their third defeat after earlier losses to Pakistan and Malaysia.
China, who finished sixth at the Asian Games, made a flying start when Kai Li converted a penalty corner in the opening minute, beating Canadian goalkeeper Morgan.
However, Canada responded almost immediately, with Navdip Chandi equalising a minute later.
Chandi struck again before the end of the first quarter, finding the net from inside the circle to give Canada a 2-1 lead against goalkeeper Zhiyuan Zhang.
The second and third quarters saw end-to-end action as both teams searched for another goal.
China gradually found their attacking rhythm, but Canada’s defence remained resolute, denying their opponents space and clear opportunities inside the circle.
Canada strengthened their advantage in the fourth quarter when Gurnoor Bhullar unleashed a powerful long-range effort to make it 3-1.
China refused to give up and intensified their attacks in the closing stages. Their persistence paid off when Jiashun Shi converted a penalty corner in the 60th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
However, Canada held on to secure the victory and end their losing streak.
Canada will face hosts Malaysia in their final match on Friday, while China take on Japan on Oct 21.
