Ahead of the festive season, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with several Cabinet members, participated in the Yamuna cleanliness drive at Haathi ghat near ITO on Sunday and appealed to Delhiites to stop dumping plastic wrappers, damaged idols and other religious waste into the river or at its ghats, according to a statement from the CM’s office.
“Every citizen must change their behaviour and ensure that no waste reaches the river. Keeping the Yamuna clean is not the responsibility of any single department or organisation but a shared responsibility of society as a whole,” the CM said.
Ms. Gupta and her Cabinet colleagues joined cleanliness drives across 70 locations at various Yamuna ghats and surrounding areas in the Capital as part of the ‘Chalo Yamuna’ campaign, the statement added.
“I urge all Delhiites to join this public participation drive, become ‘Yamuna Praharis’ (‘Guardians of the Yamuna’) and contribute to the cleanliness and protection of Maa Yamuna,” Ms. Gupta said.
She said that the Delhi government is continuously working at various levels to make the Yamuna pollution-free by setting up sewage treatment plants (STPs) and decentralised sewage treatment plants to tap drains that discharge into the Yamuna. The government is prioritising all necessary work related to cleaning the Yamuna to effectively control the sources of pollution entering the river, she added.
