Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan argues that bitcoin could benefit across radically different AI-driven economic outcomes, from a productivity boom to a recessionary crash. His thesis rests on one idea: Whether the world gets more abundance, more money creation, or simply more adoption, scarcity still favors bitcoin.
Key Takeaways
- Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan says bitcoin can benefit whether artificial intelligence (AI) booms, busts, or delivers modest growth.
- Scarcity, liquidity, and adoption form three separate paths that could support long-term bitcoin demand.
- The thesis holds only if bitcoin keeps gaining credibility as a scarce global store of value.
Bitcoin Doesn’t Need One AI Outcome to Win, Matt Hougan Argues
Bitcoin investors may be overthinking the AI question.
That is the argument from Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan, who says the cryptocurrency can emerge stronger across nearly every major economic path tied to artificial intelligence.
Hougan’s framework is deliberately broad. AI could trigger extraordinary productivity growth, collapse into a debt-fueled bust, or simply deliver modest gains without reshaping the economy.
In his view, each scenario still creates a plausible route to higher long-term bitcoin demand.
AI Abundance Could Make Scarcity More Valuable
The most bullish scenario for the economy may also support bitcoin.
If AI sharply increases productivity and makes software, legal work, diagnostics, and other intelligence-heavy services dramatically cheaper, then Hougan expects value to migrate toward things that remain scarce.
That includes real estate, art, gold, and bitcoin.
His logic is simple: abundance reduces the value of what can be reproduced easily while increasing the relative appeal of assets with fixed or constrained supply.
Bitcoin’s hard supply cap would therefore become more important, not less, in a world where AI makes many other goods and services abundant.
An AI Bust Could Trigger the Liquidity Trade
The opposite outcome could also eventually favor crypto, according to Hougan.
If the AI investment boom breaks, then high-growth assets could fall, data-center borrowers could default, and the economy could slide into recession. Bitcoin would likely sell off initially alongside other risk assets.
What happens next is central to his thesis.
Hougan expects policymakers to respond with rate cuts, balance-sheet expansion, and potentially large-scale financial support because of AI’s economic and geopolitical importance.
That would increase liquidity and money supply, conditions bitcoin’s price has historically benefited from.
Still, this is a scenario, not a guarantee. A recession could produce a painful drawdown before any policy response strengthens the bitcoin case.
Even a Soft Landing Keeps the Bitcoin Thesis Alive
Hougan’s third path is less dramatic: roughly 3% growth, 4% interest rates, and a manageable AI buildout.
In that world, he expects bitcoin adoption to continue through ETF flows, financial advisors, corporate treasuries, and potentially also sovereign balance sheets. Government debt would continue rising, while bitcoin could keep taking market share as a store-of-value asset.
Hougan is not arguing that bitcoin’s price rises in a straight line. He also acknowledges risks outside macroeconomics, including quantum computing, coordinated regulation, or an unexpected shift toward tighter fiscal discipline.
The broader point is that bitcoin’s investment case does not depend on a single AI outcome. If AI creates abundance, scarcity may win. If AI crashes, liquidity may return. If neither happens, adoption can continue.
For Hougan, different roads lead to the same destination: a larger role for bitcoin in the global financial system.
