The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that more than 2.6 million girls in Afghanistan have been denied an education since 2021.
In a report published on Wednesday, October 14, the organization said educational restrictions had deprived girls of learning opportunities and forced many to remain at home.
The report highlights the situation of girls who have been unable to continue their education after completing sixth grade and now spend most of their time at home.
According to the report, some girls have abandoned their dreams of pursuing further education and entering professions such as medicine because schools have been closed to them.
UNICEF added that being denied access to school has not only limited girls’ educational opportunities but also affected their psychological well-being, increasing feelings of loneliness, isolation and hopelessness among them.
The organization said it continues to support primary education and learning programmes for girls and boys in Afghanistan. Its efforts include helping build and renovate schools, training female teachers and providing educational materials.
