Maurice Ogeta, who served as Raila Odinga's personal bodyguard for 29 years, has publicly accused academic and activist Professor Makau Mutua of compromising the former opposition leader's security during the 2023 anti-government protests, saying he has not fully forgiven Mutua to this day.

Ogeta made the remarks on Sunday, October 11, recounting some of the most dangerous moments he experienced while protecting the former prime minister.
Makau Mutua's livestream allegations
Speaking during an NTV interview, Ogeta said that during one of the 2023 protest operations, Mutua was travelling inside Raila's vehicle and began livestreaming events in real time, broadcasting not only what was happening outside but also the internal coordination taking place among the security team.

"He was inside our car. If you are doing it live, it's being seen by friends and enemies at the same time," Ogeta said, adding that calls reached him from contacts in the United States and South Africa warning that something was wrong.
He said he looked into the matter and found it was Mutua doing the recording.
Ogeta said he attempted to caution Mutua but appeared to suggest the warnings were not heeded.
He stated that days after the incident, he was abducted, and he believes some of his own people played a role in exposing his movements.
"Some of our guys really did expose me," he said, before adding: "To date, I am not very sure whether I have forgiven him on that."
The Pipeline demonstrations and Raila's near miss
Ogeta also described a harrowing episode during what he identified as the Pipeline demonstrations, which he recalled as one of the most dangerous situations he encountered throughout his years of service.
He recounted how an armed attacker approached the vehicle carrying Raila while riot police fired water cannons and tear gas, limiting visibility through the windscreen.
During the confrontation, Ogeta said he physically forced Raila to lie flat and kept one hand pressed on him throughout, not wanting the attacker to determine where the opposition leader was positioned.
He also recalled hearing the officer in charge of Raila's lead vehicle, identified as Mr. Chuanya, say over the radio, "They have killed mzee."
Ogeta described the moment as one in which he and the driver braced for the worst, believing they were outnumbered and outarmed.
"Even my blood registered that we are dead," he said.
