No mosquitoes in the House of Mouse.
A civil engineer has revealed why there are no mosquitoes at Disney parks.
“You won’t get bitten by a mosquito at Walt Disney World, and that is completely by design,” shared The Mouselets in a TikTok post.
The self-described “civil engineer who loves Disney” has made it her mission to show the marvels that mechanize the happiest place on earth.
“Finding a mosquito in the Disney parks is extremely rare,” she notes, a kind of miracle in its own right given Disney World’s location in Central Florida.
“Before Disney bought the land in the 1960s, the 25,000 acres were primarily swamp and marshland. That meant millions of gallons of stagnant standing water, which is the ultimate breeding ground for mosquitoes,” she said.
After the purchase, Disney brought on Major General Joe Potter to address the pests.
As a US Army engineer and governor of the Panama Canal Zone, Potter led a region under relentless assault from malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
According to the Mouselets, Potter proposed digging miles of interconnected drainage canals throughout the Disney property to clear and dry the soil for construction of what would become Walt Disney World Resort.
In addition to serving as a control system that protects the entire resort from flooding during fierce storms, the same canals effectively mitigate mosquitoes.
“Mosquitoes require completely still, stagnant water to lay their eggs, so by keeping the water in constant motion, it completely disrupts their life cycle before they can ever hatch.”
Per the Mouselets, Disney doubles down on mosquito prevention and elimination through biological and natural pest controls.
“They spray a liquid garlic extract around the park perimeters. Mosquitoes don’t like the smell, but most humans can’t even detect it once it dries,” she explained.
In addition to garlic and continuing the theme of vampire-adjacent strategies, Disney has built bat houses across the park to encourage these natural predators to breed.
“Over at the Fort Wilderness Campground, there is a famous bat house right near the Bonnet Creek that can hold up to 1,000 bats,” explained the Mouselets, noting that a single bat can consume thousands of insects every single night.
As usual, the comments section was rife with opinions, with many claiming they were regularly and ravenously bitten by mosquitoes at Disney World.
“Talk to me after staying at Wilderness Lodge and waiting on the boat dock,” said one visitor.
“I was at Disney World last weekend and got bitten at the Grand Floridian watching the fireworks,” reported another.
“I got 67 bites on my honeymoon there,” a third claimed.
Others criticized the environmental consequences of Disney’s de-mosquito infrastructure.
“Everyone here is complaining about every insect they’ve encountered, completely overlooking that they are in Florida swamps that were destroyed to build a park,” lamented one.
“As a hobbyist entomologist, I find this disturbing but interesting,” added another.
“When you kill the bugs, you kill the birds,” a third remarked.
In a bit of employment engineering, Disney allegedly plans to restructure its sprawling television operation, a report says, resulting in hundreds of layoffs.
Top executives at the House of Mouse are ironing out plans to consolidate the TV divisions and slash jobs, the Wall Street Journal reported last week, noting the changes might not be finalized before the end of the year.
Earlier this month, Disney quietly raised ticket prices, pushing its coveted 1-Day “Park Hopper” pass past $300 on peak weekends.
While the multi-park pass is advertised at $280, mandatory fees and an extra $18.40 tax make the checkout total $301.40.
To make matters worse, entry remains subject to capacity limits — meaning the hefty ticket doesn’t even guarantee you’ll get in.
