A man in his 20s who took a national technical qualification exam while wearing AI-enabled smart glasses has been referred to prosecutors.
Seoul's Songpa Police Station said on the 22nd that it recently referred the man, identified only as A, to prosecutors without detention on charges of obstruction of business and violating the National Technical Qualifications Act. He is accused of wearing AI glasses while sitting for the information processing engineer exam administered by the Human Resources Development Service of Korea on May 22.
On the day of the exam, A had entered a command telling a smartphone application linked to the AI glasses to "solve the questions" before taking the test, according to police. An exam proctor spotted a camera lens and an indicator light on the frame of A's glasses during the test and caught the cheating.
Investigators found no indication that A conspired with anyone else or photographed exam questions with the smart glasses to leak them.
Cheating with smart glasses on national exams and university entrance tests has been on the rise. According to the Human Resources Development Service of Korea, five cases of cheating using smart glasses and four cases using smartphones have been detected this year in national qualification exams it administers.
The use of AI glasses to cheat has spread to university campuses. Yonsei University said it caught a test-taker wearing smart glasses during a mathematics essay exam for science and integrated-track applicants held on the 10th at its Sinchon campus in Seoul's Seodaemun district, and is considering filing a criminal complaint. Cheating on admissions tests at private universities can be punished as obstruction of business under the criminal code.
