Backed by President Lula da Silva, the proposal received 75 votes in favour and one against. The reform replaces the traditional six-day working schedule with five working days and two days of rest, giving employees more leisure time. The amendment now awaits presidential promulgation following its approval.
Business organisations have called for further discussions following the Senate’s approval of shorter working hours. The National Confederation of Commerce acknowledged the importance of improving working conditions but requested further economic assessments.
Meanwhile, the National Confederation of Industry warned of increased production costs and potential job losses. Restaurant representatives have proposed alternative flexible working arrangements for employees and employers.
