The latest update has brought Google’s AI assistant to Google Maps on Apple’s in-car platform for the first time. Previously, Google Assistant was not available inside Google Maps on CarPlay in the same way it was during navigation on an iPhone. Gemini has already been available in Android Auto, making this expansion an important step toward bringing a similar experience to Apple users.
To access the feature, drivers can open Google Maps on their CarPlay display, begin navigating and tap the Gemini icon on the screen. They can then speak naturally rather than relying on short, fixed voice commands.
US Rollout Begins as Global Availability Expands
Google said that Gemini in Google Maps for CarPlay is available in the United States, with a global rollout also underway. The feature’s arrival may depend on regional availability and the version of Google Maps installed.
The update also gives drivers a way to report road incidents through conversation. They can tell Gemini about traffic disruptions, helping them communicate problems without navigating through multiple menus.

A More Conversational Driving Experience
The addition reflects Google's wider push to make Gemini useful beyond traditional search and chat. For drivers, the appeal is simple: they can ask follow-up questions, explore options and adjust a route through a single conversation.
Safety remains important, however. Drivers should avoid lengthy interactions and keep their attention on the road, even when using voice-based assistance. With Gemini now reaching CarPlay, Google Maps users have another way to plan stops and respond to changing travel conditions without repeatedly handling their phones.
