Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has explained his decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes out of the starting line-up for the club’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Sunday, insisting the move was based on “pure football” considerations.
Fernandes started the encounter on the bench following reports that he had criticised Carrick’s tactics after Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat to Como in midweek.
The decision attracted attention ahead of the crucial fixture at Old Trafford, with questions raised about the midfielder’s omission and its possible connection to the reported disagreement between the two men.
Speaking before the match, Carrick acknowledged that selecting the starting line-up was a difficult responsibility, stressing that his priority was to make decisions he believed would benefit the team.
“Picking the team is always a difficult decision,” the United manager said.
“We’ve got to make what we feel is the right one for the team to try to get the performance we want.”
When pressed specifically on why Fernandes had been dropped to the bench, Carrick offered a brief explanation.
“Pure football,” he said.
The manager did not provide further details about the decision, leaving questions about Fernandes’ omission unanswered.
Bournemouth compound United’s problems
Carrick’s decision ultimately failed to produce the desired result as Manchester United suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
The visitors took the lead in the 38th minute when Rayan connected with Justin Kluivert’s free-kick before Marcus Tavernier doubled their advantage five minutes later.
Bournemouth completed the scoring through Evanilson, who rounded goalkeeper Senne Lammens before finishing from a narrow angle with 20 minutes remaining.
Despite United’s struggles, Fernandes remained on the bench throughout the encounter, as Carrick opted against introducing the Portuguese international during the second half.
The defeat extended United’s winless run to eight matches and left them 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.
The result also increased scrutiny of Carrick’s team selection and tactical decisions as United continued to struggle for consistency.
Fernandes, who was named the Premier League’s player of the year last season, remains an important figure for the club, making his absence from the starting line-up a major talking point.
With United struggling to turn their fortunes around, Carrick faces increasing pressure to improve results and restore confidence within the squad.
