Big Tech This Week, a media company founded by entrepreneur and former Meta executive Fatu Ogwuche, is launching a weekly live technology show, betting that African tech audiences want to hear directly from the founders and operators behind the products they use.
The show, Tech This Week, will combine a rundown of technology news with interviews spanning business, products and culture. Ogwuche said it will be free to watch and funded through sponsorships, advertising and paid segments.
The launch expands Big Tech This Week’s coverage into live video, building on an earlier Twitter Spaces series that Ogwuche said attracted more than 100,000 cumulative listeners over a year. That programme featured conversations with founders, investors and other technology professionals.
Ogwuche said the show is starting with about four sponsors, whose support has provided enough runway for a year of weekly broadcasts. She declined to disclose the investment or identify the sponsors during an interview with TechCabal.
Her proposition is that a news article or a recorded podcast does not always give audiences enough opportunity to engage with the people building companies that increasingly shape their lives.
“It’s a very important time to hear directly from the people who are essentially in the middle of your life,” Ogwuche said.
She points to TBPN, the live technology show covering Silicon Valley, as a reference for the format. Tech This Week will seek to bring a similar immediacy to African technology coverage, with conversations tied to developments across the industry.
Its intended audience includes founders, investors, operators, regulators and the people who use technology products. Across Big Tech This Week’s existing formats, Ogwuche said its largest audience falls between ages 25 and 44, with viewers and readers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia and diaspora markets including Britain, the United States and Canada.
Beyond the funding announcement
The show arrives as Ogwuche sees a widening range of stories emerging from African technology businesses.
She argues that in the past decade, many businesses have been devoted to solving essential problems like helping people make payments, save money, invest and run businesses. Those businesses remain central to the industry, but she also sees founders pursuing interests in gaming, entertainment, sport and other areas.
For her, that creates an opportunity to cover technology through the people and cultural changes around it, alongside company announcements and fundraising milestones.
“The last decade has been building for survival,” she said. Now, she sees more founders building from “joy” and “curiosity”.
The programme will bring established industry figures into conversation alongside newer founders, engineers and product managers. Ogwuche said her industry relationships will help secure guests who do not regularly give interviews.
That access is central to the pitch. The show’s appeal will depend partly on whether it can bring compelling guests into a regular broadcast and give audiences a reason to follow the conversation live.
Ogwuche also plans to cover companies beyond Nigeria. Speaking from Addis Ababa, where she had been meeting founders, she said the programme would seek stories from across the continent.
“Even now with the show, it’s also going to make me be more disciplined about ensuring that we’re adequately covering milestones from other parts of the continent,” she said.
The ambition presents an editorial challenge: building a recognisably African show while avoiding an overwhelming focus on Nigeria’s founders and companies. Ogwuche said the weekly schedule would require greater discipline in covering developments elsewhere.
Access and scrutiny
A programme built around access to founders must also decide how to use it.
Asked how she would prevent the show from becoming a platform for guests to promote themselves without scrutiny, Ogwuche said her approach would include coverage of both business achievements and regulatory trouble.
“If you’re building and you’re doing something incredible, I’m going to cover it,” she said. “If you land in trouble, I’m also going to cover it.”
She described her approach as avoiding “gotcha” journalism while rejecting the suggestion that access should mean favourable treatment. Still, she made clear that the programme would emphasise innovation and promising developments in the industry.
“What I really want to focus on is the positive things that happen,” she said.
Alongside sponsorships and advertising, Ogwuche said some segments would be paid for, with product reviews among the formats being developed. She did not detail how commercial segments would be distinguished from independent editorial coverage. For viewers, those distinctions will matter as the programme develops its authority.
Building a weekly habit
Ogwuche has invested in equipment and commissioned a set for the programme, choosing to build production capacity for a recurring show. Sponsorship has helped finance those preparations and, she said, secured the runway to broadcast consistently for 12 months.
The live programme will also feed a wider distribution operation. Full interviews and clips will appear on YouTube and social media, including Instagram and LinkedIn, while audio will be distributed through Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
That gives the company several ways to reach people who miss the live broadcast. It also means the show’s reach will extend beyond the audience watching at a scheduled time.
Internet access remains a limit. Ogwuche said the programme would primarily serve a digital audience, although she hopes journalists and broadcasters can draw on its interviews to bring relevant information to people through other channels.
Her larger ambition is to demonstrate that African technology coverage has room for more formats, and that audiences will return for them.
“We need to keep creating things that are fun, enjoyable, but also authoritative,” she said.
