With Mycopunk, an unusual looter-shooter left Early Access on October 20. Developed by Pigeons at Play and published by Devolver Digital, the game offers frantic co-op action with an especially flexible upgrade system – and is available at a 50% discount for the first time to celebrate its full release.

Mycopunk sends players on co-op missions against fungus-like aliens that infect machines and turn their technology against them. Up to four players team up to tear through hordes of enemies and collect new equipment – essentially like Helldivers, but with looter-shooter mechanics reminiscent of Borderlands. With its cel-shaded graphics, Mycopunk also bears a visual resemblance to the latter.
One of the game's standout features is its upgrade system. Weapons and abilities can be customized using differently shaped modules placed on a grid, allowing players to create highly flexible builds. There's also a fast-paced movement system featuring jumps, dashes and other mobility abilities. Mycopunk can be played solo as well, although reviews suggest that the experience is considerably less enjoyable without teammates.

The core concept has been well received by players. Of the roughly 4,800 Steam reviews, 88% are positive. However, some players criticize the sometimes excessive grinding and relatively limited enemy variety. The full release introduced several major additions, including a new playable character, an additional region and new weapons and missions. The update also brought balance adjustments, bug fixes and performance improvements. The complete patch notes are available on Steam. It remains to be seen how the game will develop in the weeks following its full release.
Anyone interested in trying it out can currently pick up the game, which launched into version 1.0 on October 20, for around $7.50 instead of $15. According to SteamDB, this is its lowest price to date. The game also cost $15 during Early Access and had never previously been discounted by more than 35%. However, the game is not playable on the Steam Deck.

As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
