Typically it’s the more outlandish outfits that tend to grab the attention of street style photographers, and so when functional pieces manage to stand out, it’s worth taking note. This fashion month the street style crowd used playful and unexpected colour combinations to make otherwise simple jumpers a photo opportunity.
“Autumn is traditionally a season where the colour palette is cosy and in line with the landscape, with a blend of pumpkin, conker and slate shades. However, the autumn/winter 2026 collections invited a more playful approach to colour with electric blue, royal purple and yellow tempting us away from the usual sensible neutrals,” wrote Vogue’s Emma Spedding in her recent article about the trending colour pairing the fashion crowd can't get enough of.
A humble knit is perhaps the easiest way to embrace a pop of colour as the weather cools and colourful jumpers and cardigans have been a regular sight in the Vogue office. Primary shades like bright red, Klein blue and emerald green have all been worn by staffers this week, while one of the season’s more unexpected shades – purple – feels particularly appealing in a plush, tactile knit.
Previously, we’ve reported on individual jumper colours, from bright red to butter yellow, gaining traction on the street-style circuit. This season, however, almost every colour imaginable has been represented in the latest street style. The trick to making a colourful knit feel fresh is to consider how you style it. Those who prefer a quieter approach can pair it with black tailoring, dark denim or a classic wool coat. Alternatively, take cues from the street-style set and experiment with colour blocking, combining contrasting saturated shades.
There’s also the question of how to wear your knit. Pulled on conventionally, of course, is the go-to, but draping it artfully over the shoulders or around the waist introduces both colour and a welcome extra layer when temperatures dip. Whether you gravitate towards punchy primary colours, rich jewel tones or something softer, there are plenty of ways to make a colourful knit work with the pieces you already own.
