Billionaires are channeling $300 million into a campaign opposing California’s proposed one-time 5% wealth tax on the state’s wealthiest residents, as reported by Bloomberg Markets. This substantial financial commitment is aimed at defeating Proposition 40, a ballot measure set for the November 3, 2026 election. Proposition 40 seeks to levy a significant tax on the net worth of approximately 250 billionaires who resided in California at the start of the year, with the majority of the revenue earmarked for healthcare initiatives. Despite the opposition’s heavy spending, recent polling indicates that the measure still has more support than opposition, although less than a majority, leaving its outcome uncertain.
Key Takeaways
- Market behavior suggests participants view the $300 million opposition as consistent with a reduced likelihood of the wealth tax passing.
- The current odds of Proposition 40 passing, as reflected in prediction markets, have decreased to 24.5% from 29% a week ago.
- The involvement of high-profile figures and significant financial backing in the opposition campaign appears to indicate strong resistance to the initiative.
What to Watch
Watch for any shifts in polling data or public endorsements that could influence the outcome of Proposition 40. Key developments to monitor include potential changes in Governor Gavin Newsom’s stance or significant endorsements from political or business figures. Additionally, further financial contributions or strategic moves by either side could impact market perceptions and the perceived likelihood of the measure passing. Markets will also be attentive to reports of any substantial relocations by California’s wealthy, which could suggest increasing opposition to the tax.
