Luís Castro was sacked by Grêmio on September 13, but an agreement has yet to be reached over his termination payout.
According to reporting by ge, the amount is believed to be R$30 million, as the club must pay the full remaining value of his contract, which was due to run until December next year.
The sum includes 15 months of remaining salary, two months covering 13th-month salary payments (for 2026 and 2027), and other charges.
Grêmio, also according to ge, disputes that figure. However, the club has not confirmed the size of the outstanding debt.
A penalty also applies for each day the termination payout remains unpaid, starting from the date of his dismissal, along with interest.
Grêmio's management continues to discuss the best way to reach an agreement with Luís Castro, who has not left Porto Alegre.
The Portuguese coach is reportedly unwilling to accept a reduced termination payout.
He would only agree to waive the penalties and interest accrued since his dismissal.
The "mission" of finding common ground with Luís Castro is just one more item on Grêmio's list.
Grêmio is already struggling to pay other debts and is currently under a transfer ban.
A difficult situation on the pitch, too
Grêmio turned to Renato Gaúcho to replace Luís Castro, but the club has yet to win since the fan favorite's return.
They have picked up just three points in five Brasileirão matches during that spell.
That run has dropped Grêmio into the competition's bottom four.
Grêmio was 16th with 28 points and is now 18th with 31.
The team will play again next Saturday (24), away to Coritiba.
