DAR ES SALAAM: A PLACE among Africa’s elite is within reach for Simba SC, Young Africans, Azam FC and Singida Black Stars, but after all four Tanzanian representatives reached the group stage last season without progressing further, the challenge is no longer simply to qualify, it is to make a deeper continental impact.
Tanzania’s four representatives in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup stand on the threshold of another significant achievement, with the prospect of sending all four clubs into the group stages offering a fresh opportunity to strengthen the country’s growing presence in African football.
Simba SC and Young Africans carry nations’ hopes in the CAF Champions League, while Azam FC and Singida Black Stars are pursuing their ambitions in the Confederation Cup.
A successful conclusion to their respective qualifying ties would give Tanzania a repeat of last season’s collective achievement, when all four clubs made it to the group stages of their competitions. Yet that previous accomplishment comes with an important reminder.
Although the quartet successfully negotiated the qualifying rounds last season, none managed to progress beyond the group stage.
This time, qualification must be viewed as the beginning of the mission rather than its ultimate destination. For Tanzania, having four clubs in the group stages would represent a strong collective statement.
But the real measure of progress will be whether the teams can turn that opportunity into sustained performances against some of the continent’s most established sides.
Simba and Yanga carry Champions League ambitions
In the Champions League, Simba and Young Africans are once again tasked with carrying the country’s hopes in Africa’s premier club competition.
Simba enter their second preliminary-round assignment against Equatorial Guinea’s 15 de Agosto with encouraging domestic form behind them.
Their recent victories over Mighty Wanderers, Azam FC, Young Africans and Mashujaa have provided a platform for coach Steve Barker to build confidence ahead of the continental challenge.
The attacking contributions of Libasse Gueye, Elie Mpanzu, Clatous Chama and Anicet Oura have offered Simba several avenues to trouble opposing defences, while Barker has also stressed the importance of defensive organisation, pressing and winning possession quickly.
“When our front forwards start together with Libasse, Mpanzu, Chama and Oura you are sure they are all can score or assist, they are very difficult to contain,” Barker said.
“They have all got different attributes. There is speed, power, trickery and cleverness among all four, so I think they complement each other very well.”
Simba’s emphatic 7-1 aggregate victory over Malawi’s Mighty Wanderers in the previous round demonstrated their attacking potential.
However, the next challenge demands the same concentration and discipline if they are to secure passage to the group stage.
“I always tell the team and players that to attack well, you need to defend well,” Barker said.
The arrangement for both legs against 15 de Agosto to be played at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam also presents a distinctive situation.
While Simba will be familiar with the venue, they must still approach the tie carefully and avoid assuming that the opponent will be an easy obstacle.
Young Africans, meanwhile, face Madagascar’s Centre de Formation de Football d’Andoharanofotsy (CFFA), with the Tanzanian side needing to put their recent Kariakoo Derby disappointment behind them.
Coach Manqoba Mngqithi has identified midfield control as an area requiring attention following the defeat to Simba. The ability to maintain balance in central areas, protect the defence and create attacking opportunities will be important as Yanga turn their focus to the continental assignment.
Club Communications Manager Ally Kamwe has also warned against underestimating CFFA, stressing that every team reaching this stage has its own ambitions and tactical preparations. For Yanga, the immediate objective is to negotiate the tie successfully.
Beyond qualification, however, lies the challenge of converting their continental experience and expectations into a stronger campaign than last season.

Azam and Singida seek their own breakthrough
In the Confederation Cup, Azam FC and Singida Black Stars have equally important opportunities to contribute to Tanzania’s continental ambitions.
Azam face Egyptian opponents ZED FC in the second preliminary round, with coach Florent Ibenge urging his players to believe in their quality and approach the contest without fear.
The Ice Cream Makers arrive at the assignment after a 2-0 domestic victory over Coastal Union, but Ibenge recognises that facing Egyptian opposition presents a demanding test.
His message has been clear: respect the opponent, trust the team’s abilities and give everything on the pitch. Azam are also motivated by the desire to improve on last season’s performance.
Ibenge has emphasised that overcoming difficult away fixtures is essential for a team seeking to make greater progress in continental competition.
“We have told the players that it is possible to win. We want to give them confidence and make them believe in themselves because we have quality in the team. They have to show that quality during the game,” Ibenge said.
A positive outcome against ZED would strengthen Azam’s prospects ahead of the return leg and bring the group stage closer. But the club’s broader ambition must extend to competing effectively once there.
“We believe in ourselves, and we have to play. What I have told my players is that, after these two games, we should have no regrets. If the opponent is better than you, what can you do? You congratulate them, but you must do everything on the pitch to win. We do not fear them simply because they are an Egyptian team,” he said.
Singida Black Stars, meanwhile, have made an impressive start to their continental campaign.
Their 10-1 aggregate victory over South Sudan’s Al-Ghazala SC in the opening round demonstrated their attacking strength and provided a confidence boost ahead of the second-round encounter with Kenya’s Tusker FC.
The upcoming East African contest presents a different challenge, with both sides seeking a place in the Confederation Cup group stage. Singida must now show that their impressive openinground performances can be sustained against a more demanding opponent.
For a club seeking to establish itself on the continental stage, reaching the group phase would be another important step. Progressing further would make an even stronger statement about its development and ambitions.
The lessons from last season
The common thread connecting the four clubs is the opportunity to repeat a collective achievement while correcting what went wrong after qualification last season.
Reaching the group stage requires teams to survive the pressure of preliminary rounds, navigate two-legged ties and deliver results when the margin for error is small.
Yet the group phase introduces another level of difficulty, where consistency, squad depth, tactical adaptability and the ability to collect points against different opponents become decisive.
That is where Tanzania’s representatives must seek improvement. Simba and Yanga need to demonstrate that their Champions League ambitions can translate into performances capable of carrying them beyond the initial group stage. Azam and Singida face the same broader responsibility in the Confederation Cup.
The experience gained last season should provide useful lessons, but experience alone will not guarantee progress.
The clubs must turn those lessons into better preparation, stronger performances and greater consistency. For Tanzanian football, having four representatives in the group stage would be an achievement worth celebrating.
It would also provide another opportunity for the country’s clubs to measure themselves against a wider range of African opposition. However, the next step is clear: qualification must be followed by progress.
More than four clubs at stake
The immediate attention is on the results of the qualifying ties, with each club needing to do enough across its two legs to advance.
But the significance of these matches extends beyond the individual ambitions of Simba, Yanga, Azam and Singida.
Their performances also shape perceptions of Tanzanian club football and contribute to the country’s standing in continental competition.
A repeat of last season’s four-club groupstage representation would confirm the ability of Tanzania’s leading sides to compete through the qualification rounds. Going further would provide the stronger evidence that they are translating that ability into continental progress.
The challenge, therefore, is twofold: first, secure the group-stage places; then ensure that the story does not end there. Tanzania has four clubs chasing one collective milestone. The next victory in each qualifying tie could bring that milestone within reach.
