SAWS upgrades KwaZulu-Natal storm warning to yellow level 4 for severe thunderstorms

• The South African Weather Service upgraded KwaZulu-Natal's weather alert from Yellow Level 2 to Yellow Level 4 on Monday, 19 October 2026
• The warning covers key areas including eThekwini, Msunduzi, uMngeni and KwaDukuza, with hazards including hail, lightning and winds up to 83 km/h
• Residents were urged to avoid flooded roads and secure outdoor items as flash flooding threatened informal settlements and urban routes

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) escalated its storm warning for parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, 19 October 2026, raising the alert level from Yellow Level 2 to Yellow Level 4 for severe thunderstorms.

The upgrade was triggered by a surface-ridging high-pressure system interacting with an upper-level trough over the province. The combination is expected to produce widespread thundershowers, excessive lightning, hail, heavy downpours and southerly winds reaching up to 83 km/h.

The warning is active from 13:00 to 23:59 SAST and focuses on southern and interior KZN, with eThekwini, Msunduzi, uMngeni and KwaDukuza among the primary risk areas.

Additional alerts across KZN and Free State

SAWS also issued two accompanying Yellow Level 2 alerts for the region. The first covers damaging interior winds and remains in effect until Tuesday morning, 20 October, affecting western and eastern KZN as well as the eastern Free State. Wind speeds of up to 60 km/h were recorded in Ladysmith and Newcastle.

The second alert applies to coastal winds and rough seas along the KZN shoreline between Durban and Port Shepstone, with conditions posing risks to small watercraft and beachfront activities.

What residents should watch out for

Flash flooding is one of the biggest concerns. Informal settlements, low-lying bridges and urban roads may be affected, with reduced visibility and significant traffic disruptions expected during peak storm hours.

Strong gusts and hail also pose a threat to temporary structures, roofs and power infrastructure across the affected areas.

SAWS has urged residents to avoid crossing swollen rivers, fast-flowing streams or flooded roadways. Loose outdoor items should be secured, vehicles moved under cover where possible, and commuters are advised to allow extra travel time as water accumulates on major routes.

KZN residents respond

South Africans shared their reactions on a Facebook post as the warning made the rounds:

Ansie Bester said:

"In Queensburgh we had a nice heavy rain and thunder."

Lorna Cayton wrote:

"Weather warfare."

Wietz Van Lelyveld commented:

"They upgrade weather tampering to make it worse again with cloud seeding."

Mary Flier simply responded:

"Oh dear."
