INDIA bloc leaders will hold a joint press conference on Tuesday before Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi hosts a tea meeting for Opposition MPs, civil society members and student organisations at his residence in New Delhi, sources said.
The meeting is expected to focus on a joint strategy for protests against alleged "vote chori" (vote theft) and demands for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation, sources said.
"Following today's March for Democracy and the submission of the petition ... a joint press conference of INDIA leaders will be held tomorrow afternoon, followed by tea. I invite you to join me at my residence at 5, Sunehri Bagh Road, New Delhi, at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, 13th October," the invite sent out on Monday read.
The meeting comes a day after Opposition leaders, activists and civil society members held a "March for Democracy" in the national capital and submitted a joint petition to the Supreme Court against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and alleged poll irregularities.
Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, CPI's D Raja, CPI-M leader M A Baby, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav and NCP-SCP leader Supriya Sule, joined the march.
A large crowd carrying flags and posters gathered at Connaught Place in central Delhi. The protesters breached one barricade on Bhagwan Dass Road but were stopped at a second barricade. Top INDIA bloc leaders later went to the Supreme Court to submit the petition.
The petition names the Election Commission of India, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi as parties to the case.
The development followed the Chief Justice of India declining a request for a meeting with the Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the issue, citing that the matter is sub judice.
