An independent developer has gotten Xbox One games running on Apple devices with Utsuro, an open-source project that brings the console's software environment to macOS and iOS. Its early results are promising, although the developer's claim that it works "without emulation" is debatable.
Developed by Levi (@leviidev01 on Xwitter), Utsuro takes a legitimately different approach from traditional console emulators. Rather than recreating the Xbox One's hardware, it uses a compatibility layer to run the console's Windows-derived software components on Apple's ARM-based processors, translating x86-64 code and providing the system services and graphics interfaces games expect.
The project's GitHub repository documents three games running on its Mac build: Minecraft Xbox One Edition, Sonic Mania, and Rocket League. Performance varies considerably; Minecraft reportedly reaches 36-60 FPS on the developer's iPhone 17 Pro, while Sonic Mania reportedly runs at approximately 57 FPS. Rocket League seems considerably rougher, with the repository reporting 15–20 FPS, dark lighting, and no audio, despite Levi describing it on X as running "amazingly smooth" with "minor graphical bugs."
Utsuro relies on FEXCore, a dynamic binary translator (most recently in the news for its use in the Snapdragon-powered Steam Frame) that converts x86-64 instructions into native ARM64 code at runtime. The project also implements Xbox-specific Direct3D 11.X interfaces and translates Direct3D shader bytecode (DXBC) into Apple's Metal Shading Language (MSL), while bridging other system services such as audio and input.
That makes Utsuro a compatibility layer for sure, but whether it's an "emulator" boils down to how narrowly you define the term. It doesn't reproduce the Xbox One's hardware in detail as a low-level emulator might, but it still recreates enough of the original execution environment to run software designed for another platform. Dynamic recompilation is also a well-established technique in modern emulators, so claiming that emulation would necessarily be too slow is a contradiction in terms. Most likely what the developer means is that Utsuro isn't emulating the whole hardware environment, but that doesn't make it "not an emulator."
The choice of iOS as the platform for Utsuro comes with additional hurdles, too. The project requires just-in-time (JIT) execution for efficient code translation, something iOS restricts. Its documentation explains that your options for actually running the app include StikDebug, the built-in StikJIT helper on iOS 26 and later, TrollStore, and jailbroken devices. Users will also need their own decrypted Xbox One game data. Utsuro neither includes nor decrypts game data files, so you're on your own for that. Compatibility remains experimental, too, depending on the game and the system interfaces it uses.
Utsuro joins a growing wave of experimental compatibility projects bringing software to platforms it was never designed to support. Although AI coding assistants are often credited with accelerating this trend, Levi claims on Reddit that less than 20% of Utsuro's code is AI-generated. That's possible; the project builds on established open-source technology rather than reinventing every component, and its early results suggest that running selected Xbox One games on Apple hardware is a tractable engineering challenge.
Those interested can find the source code, build instructions, compatibility information, and installation requirements on Utsuro's GitHub repository.
