Wicknell Chivayo’s 15 unpaid car gifts hang in the balance as estate is settled

• A dealership owner has confirmed that around 15 vehicles gifted by the late Sir Wicknell Chivayo were never fully paid for before his death
• Sungura musician Sugar Sugar is among those who received a car but cannot produce the official registration document to prove ownership
• Recipients of the vehicles are left in a legal grey zone, with no word yet on when the outstanding balances will be resolved

The generosity that made Zimbabwean businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo a household name has left a complicated financial trail in its wake, with at least 15 vehicles he gifted to various individuals still unpaid for at the time of his death.

Madzibaba Tendai Chipanga, who owns Enterprise Car Sales, confirmed that the outstanding balances on those cars were never settled before Chivayo passed away. He added that the matter will only be resolved once the formal proceedings around the businessman's estate have been completed. No timeline has been given for when that process might conclude.

One of the more high-profile cases involves Sungura musician Taruvinga Manjokota, widely known by his stage name Sugar Sugar and famous for his hit Mudododo. He received a Toyota Fortuner as a gift from Chivayo, but has confirmed that the vehicle's registration book is not in his possession. Without that document, his legal claim to the car remains incomplete.

Chipanga moved to quash speculation that beneficiaries had been asked to hand back their vehicles, stating clearly that no repossessions had taken place. For now, the recipients can keep the cars, but the question of whether full ownership will ever be transferred depends entirely on how the estate is administered.

The situation shines a light on a practice that was central to Chivayo's public persona. He was well known across Zimbabwe for distributing luxury cars, cash, and other high-value items to musicians, public figures, and ordinary people. Reports suggest the total number of vehicles he distributed runs into the hundreds, with some dealers left carrying significant unpaid balances as a result.

For Sugar Sugar and others in similar positions, the wait continues. Whether the estate will cover the outstanding amounts, and whether dealers will eventually hand over the registration papers, remains an open question tied entirely to the pace and outcome of the legal proceedings ahead.
