A known leaker and insider has made a comparison between the next-generation mid-range GPU, the RTX 6060, and the PS6. Good news for console buyers, it will be faster than Nvidia’s next-gen dedicated mid-range GPU, at least.
Next-generation hardware has been an interesting topic in the console space for several months, since next year marks the seven-year anniversary of current-gen consoles. Both Sony and Microsoft are expected to unveil the PS6 and Project Helix late next year, but what about next-gen desktop GPUs? Well, according to a credible leaker, they might just be several years away.
Despite multiple reports saying otherwise, Nvidia maintains that the RTX 5090 has not been cancelled. Even so, the GPU remains out of reach for most people because of its price point. That said, it offers a level of performance that’s way beyond the current-gen consoles, which match closely to older desktop GPUs like the RTX 2070 Super or the RTX 4060. The PS6, however, is expected to come close to RTX 5070 Ti or even RTX 5080 levels of performance, but what does that mean in terms of next-generation RTX GPUs?
Insider and leaker Kepler_L2 responded to a comment about the PS6 GPU comparison, claiming the RTX 6060 will not match the performance of the PS6. This means, unlike the current generation, the next-generation Sony console will be able to outperform at least the mid-range GPUs from Nvidia. Assuming the RTX 6060 will deliver as much or better performance than the RTX 5070 or RTX 5070 Ti (as has been the trend), the PS6 will still be faster.
Kepler also spoke about the release timeline for the RTX 6060 and said it will launch much later, possibly even in 2029.
When there's a supply shortage, NVIDIA tends to really drag the release of lower-end cards. There's a good chance RTX 6060 comes out in 2029.
Nvidia did something similar with the RTX 50 series. The higher-end RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 GPUs were released in January last year, followed by the lower-end RTX 5060 in May. Kepler believes the same will be true for the RTX 60 series, with the higher-end GPUs releasing earlier than the lower-end ones. He had mentioned something similar last month and seems to be sticking with the timeline.
