Guatemala wildfire aircraft went on show on Friday 23 October 2026, when President Bernardo Arévalo and the top US diplomat in the country presented four planes bought from the United States. Three are firefighting planes and one is a transport plane, and the army paid about Q230 million (about US$30 million at the Bank of Guatemala’s reference rate of Q7.64 per dollar).
For US readers the story is about Washington’s reach as much as firefighting, because the buyer is an army that, Prensa Libre reported, could buy from the United States again only after the military embargo was lifted early this year. US chargé d’affaires Jorgan Andrews, who spoke for President Donald Trump, said the planes are not combat tools or instruments of war, and that a stronger Guatemala also makes the United States stronger.
We reported the delivery on 16 October in Guatemala Army Buys 4 US Aircraft for US$30M, when the formal presentation had no date. Friday’s ceremony adds statements from the president, the defence minister and the US embassy, plus a price for the firefighting planes.
How the Aircraft Arrived and What They Cost
The four planes landed at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City on Wednesday 14 October, and the ceremony took place on the Guatemalan Air Force runway in the capital. Prensa Libre and La Hora both put the total at about Q230 million.
At the Bank of Guatemala’s reference rate of Q7.6419 per dollar on 23 October, that is about US$30.1 million. Prensa Libre reported on 15 October that the public purchasing portal Guatecompras shows US$18 million paid to the United States for the three firefighting planes alone.
Soy502, citing the US chargé d’affaires, and Infobae report that the purchase went through the US Foreign Military Sales programme, the US government’s channel for selling equipment to allies. Defence Minister Henry Sáenz said the package includes training for the crews and technical support.
Infobae lists the Twin Otter as a De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Classic 300-G, so that plane is Canadian-built even though it was bought through the United States. Each of the three Thrush planes carries 710 gallons, about 2,687 litres, so the trio can drop more than 8,000 litres per load, Prensa Libre notes.
That tank size comes from the manufacturer’s specification, not from a test in Guatemala. The Thrush planes are single-engine turboprops built for low-altitude work, Infobae adds.
What the Four Aircraft Will Do
The three Thrush planes will drop water on forest fires, and Sáenz said Guatemala will for the first time have aircraft dedicated to that task. He told reporters on 15 October that the Air Force had never had this capability in its history.
The Twin Otter can take off and land on short or rough strips, Infobae reports. It will carry troops and supplies, fly medical evacuations and set up air bridges to communities cut off by disasters.
The Guatemala wildfire aircraft will work with the national disaster agency Conred, the fire brigades and local authorities, La Hora reports. Arévalo said they will also add reconnaissance, transport and troop-deployment capacity for army units in the field.
The US Role in Guatemala Wildfire Aircraft
Arévalo said the US decision to lift its military embargo opened new chances to equip the army, and Andrews tied the cooperation to that change. Prensa Libre wrote in June that the embargo ended early this year, and Sáenz said the army had been renewing old equipment mostly with lots donated by the United States.
Arévalo described the purchase as part of a modernisation plan for the army’s land, air and sea forces. He also linked a stronger Air Force to the fight against drug trafficking and cross-border criminal groups, and mentioned Guatemala’s part in a coalition of the Americas against cartels.
Prensa Libre reported in June that the army also plans to buy weapons, ammunition and two coastguard boats under US agreements. Sáenz said then that much of the army’s equipment dates from the 1970s.
Why Guatemala Wildfire Aircraft Matter Now
Arévalo traced the purchase to the February 2024 fire on the Volcán de Agua, near Antigua Guatemala, which he said opened an unprecedented fire season. La Hora reports that the emergency lasted more than 50 days and consumed almost 1,000 hectares of forest on the volcano.
Arévalo said the state had trained people but lacked equipment at that time. He said Guatemala now has means it did not have then.
Sáenz said on 15 October that fires are getting bigger and tougher, and that two army members died fighting fires last year. He added that soldiers have been mutilated and officers badly burned.
Officials also expect a strong El Niño that could deepen drought in the coming dry season. Infobae reported on Friday that the agriculture ministry and the agency INDECA approved measures to reinforce food reserves against drought this year and next.
Prensa Libre counted more than 24,000 hectares burned in forest fires between 1 January and 18 May 2026, a season it described as altered by heat and El Niño. The national forest institute INAB told the paper that the season was within normal parameters and similar to last year’s.

What Is Not Known
The US embassy’s own statement and the Defence Ministry release could not be opened for this report, so the quotes rest on Prensa Libre, La Hora, Soy502 and Infobae. The outlets use different model designations for the Thrush planes, and only Infobae gives the Twin Otter’s maker and model.
It is not known when the aircraft will enter service, where they will be based or how much they will cost to operate each year. Arévalo himself said their usefulness will depend on maintenance, continued crew training and transparent management of the money for operating them.
The Q230 million total is the figure given by officials, and the reports reviewed publish no breakdown for the Twin Otter, training and spares. Prensa Libre’s Q137.8 million (about US$18 million) for the three Thrush planes leaves about Q92 million (about US$12 million) unexplained, which is our own arithmetic.
The US$18 million comes from Guatecompras as cited by Prensa Libre, and it implies a rate near Q7.66 per dollar, slightly above the central bank’s Q7.64. Whether that gap reflects timing or fees is not stated.
