Two factions of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami clashed at the party's Cumilla city office yesterday (14 October) during a meeting on forming the new committee, with the city unit secretary's jeep vandalised in the incident.
The incident took place around 7pm in front of Faruqi House in Gangchar, the main office of Jamaat's Cumilla city unit.
According to local sources, senior party leaders had been at odds for several days over the selection of the new ameer of its Cumilla city unit.
The disagreement surfaced during yesterday evening's meeting on forming the new committee, amid speculation that current secretary Mahabubur Rahman could become the next ameer.
The disagreement reportedly escalated into an argument, after which a faction of the party vandalised Mahabubur Rahman's jeep, sources said.
Jamaat Cumilla city unit Assistant Secretary Mosharraf Hossain told reporters that the matter was an internal issue and the party would brief the media later.
"Our meeting is still underway," he said.
Mahabubur Rahman himself confirmed that his jeep had been vandalised.
"My jeep has been vandalised. We are holding a meeting over the incident. The Cumilla city unit ameer and others are present," he said.
Meanwhile, in a press statement, Jamaat Cumilla city unit Ameer Kazi Din Mohammad said a scheduled meeting was underway at the party office around 7pm when a group of youths entered and disrupted the gathering before vandalising a vehicle as they left.
He said the party was investigating the incident to identify those involved and establish their motives, adding that it would inform the media of its findings later.
Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhidul Anwar said the incident stemmed from a dispute over party positions.
