The Xperia 10 VI launched in May of 2024, booting Android 14, and at the time Sony pledged the device would be eligible for three Android updates. That meant that it would get Android 17 at some point, but that promise will not be kept as Sony has now issued a notice to its users.

As per Sony, the Xperia 10 VI will not be getting Android 17 due to “limitations related to the device’s storage configuration”. Sony did “a detailed technical assessment” which determined that the Xperia 10 VI would not offer an “adequate” Android 17 upgrade experience. This means that Sony did, in fact, test the Xperia 10 VI with the latest Android build but ultimately decided not to ship that update to its users.
A brief summary of the events
We’ve actually never heard such an excuse from any other brand before and it just looks bad to back out of a promise made to your users. Sony did issue an official apology and confirmed that it would still oblige its promise of delivering four years of security patches for the 10 VI. We also got confirmation that no other Xperia models will be impacted.
