India has signed a grant agreement with Samoa to support people with disabilities through improved facilities for healthcare, education and skill development, as Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita visited the Pacific island nation.
The agreement for the SENESE Community Service Complex Project was signed in Apia on October 16 by Margherita and Samoa Prime Minister Laʻaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, along with Ladesha Stevenson, chairperson of SENESE Inclusive Education Support Services.
Under the agreement, India will provide 2.8 million Samoan tala, equivalent to approximately US 1.1 million Dollars, to fund the project. The initiative is aimed at improving access to specialised services for children and adults with learning and physical disabilities.
New Facilities Planned for People with Disabilities
The proposed SENESE Community Service Complex will include facilities for hearing assessments, therapy, early learning and technical and vocational training.
A soundproof room for hearing tests and dedicated therapy spaces are among the planned facilities. The complex will also have areas for early childhood learning and vocational education, helping people with disabilities access support and develop practical skills.
The project is expected to strengthen the services provided by SENESE Inclusive Education Support Services, which works to support inclusive learning and improve opportunities for people with disabilities.
Margherita's visit to Samoa is part of his official tour of Samoa, the Cook Islands and Nauru from October 16 to 22.
During the visit, he is scheduled to hold meetings with senior leaders, engage with local stakeholders and members of the Indian community, and review India-supported development projects in the region.
The visit is part of India's broader effort to strengthen diplomatic relations and development cooperation with Pacific island nations through the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC).
