By Belize Live News Staff: During talks with IDB President Ilan Goldfajn in Bangkok, Prime Minister John Briceño said the Government is consulting with the private sector on using sargassum byproducts to help generate electricity and support broader waste to energy projects.
Briceño described sargassum as a national and regional crisis, pointing to its heavy impact on tourism hubs like San Pedro and Hopkins, along with serious health, environmental and economic consequences.
He called for greater international recognition of sargassum as a disaster risk, and highlighted current and planned public investments in offshore collection, renewable energy solutions, carbon credit opportunities and byproduct development.
Goldfajn acknowledged that sargassum is a regional challenge and said the IDB is willing to involve its technical teams in exploring ways to support Belize.
The goal, according to the Government, is to transform sargassum from a growing threat into a sustainable economic opportunity for Belize and the wider Caribbean.
For coastal communities that have spent years battling the seaweed, that would be welcome news.
