The New York Knicks are looking to defend their NBA championship after finally winning the title last season. Most of last year's roster is returning, with Mitchell Robinson being the notable exception, giving the team plenty of continuity heading into the new season.
The Knicks brought NBA champion Bruce Brown to training camp to compete for a roster spot. Many believed New York should make a trade to keep him.
“Bruce Brown has also put himself in good position to get roster spot, but Knicks would need to trade a rostered player to make that happen. Brown, in my opinion, would be a great value addition for the Knicks, giving them strong veteran depth in case of injury. ESPN reported Eubanks will be waived after suffering pectoral injury,” SNY’s Ian Begley posted.
Brown is a versatile player who can contribute in several areas of the game. Reports indicated that the Knicks were exploring a trade to create a path for him to remain with the team.
“As the 2026-27 season draws near and teams contemplate roster spots, the Knicks and Lakers have both actively been exploring trade talks to move Pacome Dadiet and Dalton Knecht, respectively, sources told ClutchPoints,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.
With New York set to begin its season Tuesday night, a decision on Brown had to be made over the weekend. The Knicks were unable to complete a trade in time, so they decided to waive him for now.
“The Knicks announce that they have waived veteran Bruce Brown. James Wiseman makes NY’s opening night roster, as Brown may fill the 15th spot later in December when contracts are prorated,” Siegel posted.
Brown is willing to do whatever it takes to win, and being waived does not necessarily mean his time with New York is over. There could still be a path for him to rejoin the team later in the season. The NBA champion has built a reputation as a winner who does whatever it takes to help his team succeed.
The Knicks may not have wanted to part ways with Brown, but the second apron and their need for another center complicated their roster decisions. It will be interesting to see whether Brown waits until December for a potential return or joins another team before then.
