Madurai District Collector Nishanth Krishna inaugurated the sale of subsidised “A” grade fine-variety rice at ₹30 per kilogram on Sunday.
The initiative is being implemented under the State government’s price stabilisation scheme following Government Order (Ms) No. 80 issued by the Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection Department on October 15, 2026.
Under this scheme, families holding valid ration cards can purchase up to 5 kilograms of fine-variety rice at the subsidised rate through designated cooperative and Amudham outlets across the district.
Mr. Krishna launched the rollout at the Madurai District Pandiyan Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores in Mudakkusalai, where he formally handed over the subsidised rice packets to cardholders. Following the launch, he inspected the stock and verified the quality of the grain slated for public distribution.
The scheme will remain in effect until March 31, 2027, or until further government directives are issued. To ensure smooth distribution, the district administration has arranged for the rice to be made available across multiple cooperative stores and self-service outlets in Madurai.
Key designated outlets supplying subsidised rice:
Madurai District Pandiyan Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores Ltd. (Main Branch: Mudakkusalai; Sellur Cooperative Self-Service Section; Alagappan Nagar Cooperative Self-Service Section; Chekanurani Cooperative Self-Service Section; Mahal Cooperative Self-Service Section opposite Thirumalai Naicker Mahal).
Madurai Southern Railway Employees Cooperative Stores (Railway Colony).
Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation Employees Cooperative Stores Ltd. (Pasumpon Nagar, Bypass Road).
Madura Coats Workers Cooperative Stores Ltd. (Aarapalayam Cross Road).
With festival expenses peaking across the region, the district administration has urged the public to make full use of the subsidised rice initiative to help manage household grocery budgets.
