Connor McDavid is skating his way toward unprecedented territory in the early portion of the 2026 NHL campaign, and Leon Draisaitl is contending for the league lead in goals, but Evan Bouchard is making sure to seize his share of the spotlight on the Edmonton Oilers. The superbly skilled defenseman, who turned 27 years old on Tuesday, continues to wreak havoc on opposing squads.
Although the aforementioned franchise pillars thrived versus the Minnesota Wild, it was Bouchard who was wearing the cape by night’s end. Facing a shootout after the Oilers lost a 3-1 lead in the third period, the birthday boy fired the puck into the net to break a 3-3 tie with 1:28 remaining in overtime. Bouchard decides to be generous on his day and gifts the boisterous crowd at Rogers Place a thrilling victory.

Bouchard now has seven goals on the year and also tallied his 11th assist. Draisaitl lit the lamp at the end of the first period and beginning of the second, boosting his total to eight. McDavid recorded three assists, including one on the game-winner, and now has an eye-popping 20 through just nine games played. When this fabulous trio is in sync, the Oilers should be near-unbeatable.
The standings seems to reflect as much so far. Edmonton (7-1-1, 15 points) is just one point behind the Vegas Golden Knights for first place in the Western Conference. Hopefully, the boys will have time to take out the clutch Evan Bouchard for a proper birthday celebration before they begin preparation for Thursday’s big clash with the reigning Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
