A 57-year-old man wanted by German authorities on suspicion of drug trafficking has been arrested in the Algarve by Portugal’s Polícia Judiciária (PJ).
The foreign national was located and detained by the PJ’s Criminal Information Unit under a European Arrest Warrant issued by the German judicial authorities.
According to the PJ, the case dates back to 2022, when an investigation found that the man was allegedly involved in trafficking hashish in the German municipality of Bitz.
A subsequent search of his home also allegedly uncovered a large quantity of oxycodone and buprenorphine tablets.
The PJ says the offences could carry a prison sentence of up to 15 years. The suspect was due to appear before the Évora Court of Appeal.
