KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Nazrin Shah today called on leaders to act before consensus is reached to tackle worsening global environmental crises.
The Sultan of Perak said meaningful action required honesty about barriers, attention to communities already experiencing environmental changes, and cooperation across science, finance, law and faith.
"It asks for leadership willing to act before consensus is complete, to bear short-term cost for long-term good, and to build coalitions that outlast any single mandate," Sultan Nazrin said at the opening of the Global Tipping Points Conference 2026 today.
The Ruler said Asia's exposure to environmental vulnerability was inseparable from its capacity to lead, citing its urban experimentation, clean energy transition, and traditions of community stewardship over natural resources.
"We are not a region waiting to be rescued. We are, in significant part, a region where the rescue is already under way, however unevenly, however incompletely," Sultan Nazrin said.
The Ruler said shifting monsoons, warming seas and recurring heat were already affecting farmers in the Mekong Delta, fishing communities in the Coral Triangle and outdoor workers in cities.
He urged participants to listen to those living closest to these changes, including farmers, fishing communities and young people who would inherit the consequences of decisions made today.
Drawing on conservation efforts in Royal Belum, Perak, Sultan Nazrin said active poachers' snares had fallen by more than 90 per cent, with none recorded since 2022, while camera traps had captured a tigress with four cubs and, more recently, another with two.
"This is what stewardship looks like once the speeches end: generational, incremental, and measured not in declarations but in cubs born and snares removed," the Ruler said.
Addressing the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), Sultan Nazrin said the world had entered a "hybrid tipping zone", where technology choices would shape human agency, societal cohesion, prosperity, and the planet's health.
He called for deliberate investment in the human mind through "double literacy" — the combined ability to understand human values and judgement alongside the technologies shaping daily choices.
Sultan Nazrin said the emerging partnership depended on cultivating both human capabilities and AI, with people contributing meaning, values, imagination and discernment while technology expanded their capacity to analyse, explore and act.
The Ruler said the declaration to be shaped during the four-day conference should set out what was decided in Kuala Lumpur and what would be carried forward to next year's conference in Potsdam, as well as guide regional work.
He urged participants to identify where positive change could be achieved and commit to action, stressing that the time needed for environmental recovery strengthened the case for acting immediately.
"Positive changes we make today could take decades to manifest. And far from being a reason to delay those changes, this is, absolutely, the best reason we have to act now," Sultan Nazrin said.
The four-day conference at Sunway University, running until Oct 15, marks the series' first gathering in Asia and brings together scientists, policymakers, financiers, faith leaders and civil society representatives to explore how positive tipping points can accelerate environmental and social change. - BERNAMA
