The NUNS press release said 2026, like 2025, was among the most difficult and demanding in the recent history of Serbian journalism. “Pressure on media freedom and professional journalism has become so intense and brutal that the physical safety and livelihoods of journalists and editors are seriously threatened,” it said.
According to NUNS, Savatovic has demonstrated courage and ethical journalism in his reporting for the second consecutive year. “Despite threats and physical attacks, he has continued reporting boldly and professionally from streets and squares across Serbia, often putting his own safety at risk,” it added..
It said Masina has become increasingly influential and engaged, despite limited financial resources and opposition from party-backed online trolls. “By reporting in the public interest rather than serving the interests of powerful individuals or groups, Masina has become a thorn in the side of the authorities and of everyone whom the authorities allow to seize natural resources and exploit workers,” the press release said.
Nova.rs was also among the finalists, along with Radmilo Markovic of BIRN, Miljko Stojanovic of the Glas Zajecara portal and N1 journalist Predrag Popovic.
The award, established in 1991 by NUNS and the Dusan Bogavac Foundation, honors the memory of journalist, writer and activist Bogavac (1931-1990), one of the founders of the Solidarity Fund for Journalists in Need.
The 2026 award ceremony will be held at NUNS headquarters on Wednesday, October 21.
