Agartala, Oct 13: What most people throw away after lighting a fire has found a new life in the hands of Agartala-based artist Vijay Debnath, who has crafted an intricate Durga idol using discarded matchsticks and other everyday materials.
A resident of Chandmari in Agartala, Debnath has turned matchsticks, ice cream sticks, paper and ordinary thread into an artistic representation of Goddess Durga, demonstrating how household waste can be transformed into something striking through patience and imagination.
An art teacher by profession, Debnath began experimenting with miniature crafts during the COVID-19 lockdown, when the extended time at home gave him an opportunity to explore new forms of artistic expression.
The idea for the Durga idol emerged from an everyday observation. One day, he noticed his mother discarding used matchsticks after cooking. The sight prompted him to consider whether the seemingly useless material could be put to creative use.
That thought eventually took shape as an elaborate craft project. Debnath used matchsticks and ice cream sticks to construct different parts of the idol, while thread helped create the goddess’s flowing hair. Painting and detailed finishing touches completed the artwork.
The creation reflects his gradual journey from making miniature craft items during the lockdown to attempting a more ambitious piece inspired by the goddess.
Beyond its artistic appeal, the idol also draws attention to the possibilities of reusing discarded materials. By turning everyday household waste into an object of art, Debnath has demonstrated how resourcefulness can offer an alternative to conventional craft materials.
His work brings together creativity, religious art and recycling, showing that even the humblest objects can become the building blocks of an elaborate creation.
