The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has kept 220 relief centres and 110 community kitchens ready as part of its preparedness for the northeast monsoon and the anticipated super El Niño.
At a review meeting held at Ezhilagam on October 17, Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar directed zonal monitoring officers and officials from the Corporation and other service departments to coordinate their efforts, prioritise public safety and respond promptly to complaints.
The GCC said storm-water drain works had been expedited and largely completed. In areas without storm-water drain connections, motor pumps have been kept ready to remove stagnant rainwater. Officials have also been instructed to ensure that civic works do not obstruct the public or traffic.
Residents in low-lying areas will be evacuated to relief centres, where food and essential supplies will be provided. Field workers will be deployed in shifts round the clock, with machinery and equipment kept ready for emergencies.
Officials have also been instructed to clear fallen trees promptly and ensure the smooth flow of rainwater at drain outlets, canal junctions and river mouths. Boats and operators will be kept ready in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
Residents can report complaints through the GCC’s 1913 helpline, WhatsApp chatbot at 9445061913, the Namma Chennai app or the Corporation’s website. They can also contact zonal officers, regional Deputy Commissioners and zonal monitoring officers directly.
