The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has criticised the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over his comments on financial assistance sent home by Nigerians living abroad.
Bwala, in a post on his verified X handle on Tuesday, accused the former Anambra State governor of being “wicked and desperate” over remarks he made during a town hall meeting with Nigerians in Manchester, United Kingdom.
The controversy followed Obi’s appeal to Nigerians in the diaspora to stop giving money to relatives and others who approach them for financial assistance, arguing that continued remittances would not address the underlying causes of Nigeria’s economic hardship.
Obi later clarified his position in a separate post on Tuesday, saying his message had been misrepresented and insisting that he never asked Nigerians abroad to abandon their families.

Reacting to the clarification, Bwala maintained that Obi’s remarks amounted to asking Nigerians to withhold financial assistance from even their ailing parents until the current administration was voted out of office.
“Have you seen the wickedness of the wicked? Peter Obi said this while speaking to Nigerians in Manchester,” Bwala wrote.
“Even if your parents are dying, do not send them money until this government is voted out. Meaning that your parents should rather die than he (Peter Obi) loses the election (which he will never win though),” he added.

The presidential aide further accused Obi of desperation, alleging that his political ambition was being placed above the welfare of Nigerians’ relatives.
“By now this must be clear to the voters to know how desperate and wicked he is; but also that he is very aware of the bullish nature of the Obidients and that he implicitly endorses what they do,” Bwala said.
“His ambition is worth more than the life of our parents? Wow,” he added.
In his clarification, Obi had praised Nigerians in the diaspora for their sacrifices in supporting families back home, noting that remittances help cover school fees, hospital bills, rent and feeding expenses.
The NDC candidate said his concern was the growing dependence on money sent from abroad, arguing that Nigeria should build an economy capable of providing jobs, affordable healthcare, quality education and other basic necessities for its citizens.
He also accused political opponents of deliberately twisting his message, insisting that he was advocating for an economy that would reduce the need for Nigerians to depend on relatives overseas for survival.
