Kathmandu, October 16
The government has added 418 seats across various medical education programmes, including MBBS, BSc Nursing and BMS, compared with the previous academic year.
The 28th meeting of the Medical Education Commission, chaired by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, decided to allocate a total of 9,691 seats across different levels and disciplines at 84 educational institutions for the 2026–27 academic session, according to commission sources.
Of the additional seats, 110 have been allocated to MBBS programmes alone.
The commission prioritised expanding capacity at government-run institutions while keeping the number of seats at private medical colleges unchanged, sources said.
“The commission has not increased the seat allocation at private medical colleges. Additional seats have been approved at government institutions based on available infrastructure, human resources and monitoring reports,” a source said.
According to the commission, 90 educational institutions submitted self-assessment forms to apply for seat allocations this year. The relevant authorities monitored the institutions’ requests, and seats were allocated to 84 institutions based on the resulting reports.
The commission does not approve seats simply because an institution requests them. Allocations are made only after assessing physical infrastructure, teaching staff, other human resources and compliance with the required standards, the source said.
110 additional MBBS seats
The commission has added 110 seats to MBBS programmes this year.
Shaheed Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences in Geta, Kailali, has been allocated 50 MBBS seats for the first time, paving the way for the university to offer the undergraduate medical programme.
B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan and the Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences, operated by the Nepal Army, have each received 30 additional MBBS seats compared with last year, commission sources said.
Together, the 50 seats allocated to the university in Geta and the additional 30 seats at each of the two institutions account for the total increase of 110 MBBS seats.
Nursing and BMS seats also increased
The commission has increased seats in BSc Nursing by 210 compared with the previous academic year.
A further 98 seats have been added to the Bachelor of Medical Studies (BMS) programme.
The commission said this year’s allocations were based on demand for different academic programmes, institutional capacity and monitoring reports. Private medical colleges will retain their existing seat allocations, sources said.
