Around 24% backed beginning the process towards separation. Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the result, highlighting national unity. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed support for a stronger province within Canada.
The ballot also included nine additional questions, five concerning immigration and four addressing constitutional reform. Proposals included greater provincial control over immigration and restrictions on certain social services for non-citizens.
Alberta’s separatist movement has been driven partly by disagreements over oil revenues and provincial powers. Premier Danielle Smith previously stated that a separation referendum would not take place during her tenure following a vote against the process.
