By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a man’s body bearing apparent chop wounds in Carmelita Village, Orange Walk District, early Tuesday morning.
According to information provided during Tuesday’s police press briefing, officers were called to an area of the village around 7:50 a.m. after family members discovered the body of a man identified in the briefing as Wilson Perez.
Police said Perez left his home around 10:30 p.m. Monday, reportedly telling relatives that he was going to the village football field. When he failed to return home, concerned family members organized a search and subsequently made the disturbing discovery.
Investigators confirmed that the body appeared to have sustained chop wounds. Sources told BBN the body was found decapitated. However, police cautioned that the scene was still being processed and that the circumstances surrounding his death had not yet been established.
When questioned about allegations that the killing may have been an act of community retaliation, police said they had no information supporting that suggestion at this stage. Authorities also indicated that they were unaware of any previous report against the deceased.
A full investigation is underway to determine what happened.
