Cairo – The Egyptian House of Representatives announced on Monday that it will resume discussions on President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's request to authorize military support for Saudi Arabia next Monday.
This comes after the first session of the Egyptian Parliament to discuss the president's request began on Sunday and concluded with Monday's session.
The Egyptian Parliament had decided to hold a plenary session at Sisi's request.
On Saturday, the Egyptian president affirmed his country's full support for the security and stability of its "brothers" in the Gulf, emphasizing Cairo's "readiness to implement any measure requested by Saudi Arabia to defend its security and sovereignty."
In his speech at the graduation ceremony of the first class of the Egyptian Military Academy, Sisi said, "We stand firmly and fully support the protection and defense of the lands of our brothers in the Gulf."
He added that Egypt "will not allow any harm to come to Saudi Arabia's security or stability," indicating that he would ask the Egyptian Parliament to ratify this matter in an emergency session if requested.
The Egyptian constitution stipulates that Parliament must approve decisions of the National Defense Council regarding military operations. The Council comprises the head of intelligence, the speaker of Parliament, the minister of defense, the chief of staff of the armed forces, and the ministers of foreign affairs and the interior.
Saudi Arabia is subjected to almost daily attacks by the Yemeni Houthis using missiles and drones. The deadliest of these attacks targeted Riyadh airport on October 10, resulting in 13 deaths and more than 300 injuries.
