These stylish office staples are a far cry from clerical

The filing cabinet was built for the 20th-century office, where sameness was the point and a row of gray vertical file cabinets meant everything was perfectly organized. At home, the same piece of office furniture has a harder job. It sits beside a sofa, slides under a desk in a studio apartment, or stands in as a nightstand. It has to look more intentional and aesthetic than Enron might have it.
The pieces below are designed with that in mind. Some are metal filing cabinets in colors no office manager would sign off on, others are wood and veneer meant to blend seamlessly with the rest of your furniture, and a couple are design icons that happen to hold folders. Before you buy, check whether the drawers fit a legal size file or only letter-size folders, whether you want a locking filing cabinet for passports and tax returns, and whether casters would make it easier to pull out from under a desk.

AD editors already swear by Branch's office chairs because of the unfussy styles, and the brand's small filing cabinet brings the same design sensibility to storage. At 20 inches tall and a foot wide, it slides under most desks or into the gap beside a bookshelf. And at 22 pounds with smooth-glide wheels, it's easy to move around if you’re planning an office redesign. The smooth coated finish is a long way from the ribbed metal cabinets of a '70s office, and the sage colorway is the one we'd choose for a soft accent to brighten up your space.

Designed by the London studio Industrial Facility for Herman Miller’s OE1 collection, this trolley borrows its shape from the bar cart: a slim powder-coated steel frame on casters, topped with a rimmed tray that keeps everything in place as you wheel it from the desk to the sofa. The difference is underneath, where a tilting compartment opens to slots for folders (or a growing collection of stationery) instead of bottles.

- Materials: Veneered and solid wood

At 23 inches tall, Article's wooden Fantol cabinet is a petite option you can tuck under a low-profile desk. Plus, it looks like furniture more than equipment, which matters when your office is a corner of the living room. The oak finish sits easily alongside the dark wood, midcentury-inspired furniture some of our editors already own. The top is wide enough to serve as a printer stand for a compact model, and at $299 it's the most affordable wooden option on this list.
Best Affordable Model: Laura Davidson Furniture Stockpile Cabinet
Specs
- Dimensions: 20"D x 12.5"W x 24"H
- Materials: Steel
- Weight: 60 lbs.

Laura Davidson’s Stockpile asks a revolutionary question for file cabinets: What if they weren’t beige or black? It’s offered in more than 10 colors, like a cheerful orange and a cobalt blue, but we like the ivory for a space with lots of natural wood. Its proportions also give it a softer look than a typical steel, boxy design. At just over a foot wide, it can fit into the narrowest nooks. The drawers are designed to close gently instead of slamming, so it’s just as nice for offices that double as bedrooms or share a wall with a sleeping baby.
Best Desk Companion: West Elm Cutler File Cabinet

- Materials: Solid mahogany frame with oak or walnut veneer

West Elm’s Cutler is built for the long haul, with a solid mahogany frame under its oak or walnut veneer. If you’re still questioning if its material makeup is up to snuff, the cabinet has a contract-grade rating to verify its quality, the standard West Elm uses for furniture headed to hotels and offices. It’s sized at 16 inches to slide under the matching Cutler desks for a streamlined office set.
Best Swiveling Style: Konstantin Grcic for Magis 360 Degree Container, 5 Drawer

This model does away with the drawer pull entirely. Its five trays pivot around an aluminum spine, swinging out to the side rather than sliding forward. When left partly open, the drawers fan into a spiral that looks more like a sculpture than storage. The trays are too shallow for hanging files, so think of it as a hiding place for supplies. It's the most stylish way you’ll ever retrieve a paperclip.
Best Multipurpose Cabinet: USM Haller File Credenza
Specs
- Dimensions: 31"W x 15"D x 29"H
- Materials: Chromed steel frame and powder-coated steel panels
- Weight: 75 lbs.
Shipping & Returns
- Shipping: Ships in 13 weeks, Threshold delivery $399
- Return Policy: 30 day returns; Refund will be reduced by a restocking charge equal to 10% of the total purchase price.
The USM Haller system dates back to 1961, when the brand hired architect Fritz Haller to design a new factory. The modular steel furniture from that project now sits in MoMA's permanent collection. This credenza has two drop-down doors on top and two drawers below that hold letter-size hanging files. Every compartment locks with the turn of a coin, a nod to USM's origins as a hardware and lock maker. Lockable filing cabinets usually look like they belong in an HR department; this is the rare exception—one you'd be happy to style in a dining room and fill with anything other than paperwork.
Best Memphis Style: MoMA 5-Drawer Pivot
Specs
- Dimensions: 28.5” H x 15” W x 10.5” D
- Materials: Powder-coated steel
- Weight: 28.6 lbs
Shipping & Returns

Made in Italy and sold through the MoMA Design Store, the Pivot cabinet stacks five candy-colored drawers in a powder-coated finish that swing open rather than pull out. It's slim enough to double as a nightstand and bright enough to hold its own next to abstract art, which makes it a good fit for anyone whose office is also the bedroom.
Best Mixed-Material Cabinet: West Elm Tandem Filing Cabinet
Specs
- Dimensions: 16"W x 19"D x 20"H
- Materials: Oak veneer, steel frame
- Weight: 50.2 lbs
Shipping & Returns
- Shipping: Free delivery
- Return Policy: Free returns within 30 days.
The Tandem sets an oak-veneer case into a steel frame. It looks like a small dresser but rolls like a mobile file cabinet, so it’s simple to move around thanks to its casters and has the ability to double as storage furniture. Like the Cutler, it has a contract-grade build to ensure its durability. The Alabaster White finish shown here looks the least like it came from an office supply catalog (if those still exist?).
