ISLAMABAD: A day after the imposition of emergency measures and Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday constituted a committee headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to oversee the federal government’s handling of affairs in the province.
The committee, constituted at a meeting chaired by the prime minister, will monitor governance, law and order and day-to-day administration in KP, while coordinating the federal government’s response to the evolving situation, official sources said.
Dar, who also serves as deputy prime minister and foreign minister, was appointed convener of the committee.

Its members include Rana Sanaullah, the prime minister’s adviser on political affairs, Law Minister Azam Tarar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, and Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
Representatives of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) are also expected to join the committee, taking its membership to 11 as the government seeks broader political support for its response to the situation in KP.
At its maiden meeting, the committee reviewed the prevailing situation and discussed possible measures to address law and order challenges, maintain administrative continuity and provide relief to the affected population, the sources said.
The formation of the committee comes amid heightened political tensions over federal intervention in KP.
The measures have drawn condemnation from opposition parties, lawyers and rights groups, raising questions about the political and constitutional implications of the Centre’s intervention.
Meanwhile, the prime minister is expected to consult allied political parties today (Tuesday) to build support for the government’s next steps amid growing opposition to federal intervention.
The Centre’s move has drawn particular criticism over the displacement of a PTI-led democratically elected provincial government backed by a two-thirds majority, with the security situation cited as justification for Governor’s Rule.
