MORE than RM130 million in Budget 2027 funding for Malaysia’s film, music and creative industries, coupled with a full entertainment duty exemption for local film screenings and theatre performances in the Federal Territories, is aimed at strengthening the creative economy and expanding opportunities for local talent.
MyCreative Ventures Group chairman Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said the measures reflected the government’s commitment to developing the creative sector into a competitive, high-value contributor to national economic growth.
He said the funding would give industry players greater scope to develop their talent, produce quality works and build more resilient and sustainable creative businesses.
As technology, digital content and global competition reshape the industry, creativity must translate into greater economic value beyond the production of artistic works, he said.
The full entertainment duty exemption for tickets to local film screenings and theatre performances in the Federal Territories is also expected to stimulate demand for Malaysian productions, widen public access to quality local content and support industry earnings.
A stronger domestic market would provide a foundation for Malaysian works and talent to expand into wider regional and international markets, Bakhtiar said.
MyCreative Ventures would continue to support the country’s creative economy by focusing on value creation, strengthening industry capabilities, developing and commercialising intellectual property, and widening access to markets and business opportunities. - October 15, 2026
