UCLA has been one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 college football season, with the Bruins off to a perfect 5-0 start under new head coach Bob Chesney.
They've beaten California 45-24, San Diego State 28-10, Purdue 52-38, and Maryland 54-3 before securing their first signature win of the season, a 17-15 road victory over Dan Lanning's Oregon Ducks.
The win at Oregon was easily their most impressive. It was UCLA's first win at Autzen Stadium since 2004 and handed the Ducks their second loss of the season. It also proved they can win in different ways. Earlier in the season, their offense had carried the load, but against Oregon, their defense stepped up with a gritty, physical win over a team that reached the College Football Playoff last year.
UCLA's fast start already has Bruins fans eyeing a potential CFP run of their own this season. And when asked about his goals for the season, Chesney delivered a powerful quote that could get fans revved up even more.
"Goals are for people that want to win once," Chesney said on "The Triple Option" podcast. "Process and standards are for people that want to win long-term."

Chesney took over as UCLA's head coach in December 2025 after cementing himself as one of the best program builders in the sport. He previously coached at James Madison, where he went 21-6 across two seasons and led the Dukes to a Sun Belt championship and their first-ever CFP appearance last season. Before that, he spent six seasons at Holy Cross, winning five straight Patriot League titles, and helped turn Assumption into one of the top Division II programs in the country.
Chesney's ability to develop under-recruited players, establish standards, and build a winning culture was clearly a major selling point in UCLA's decision to hire him. And so far, it's paid off. UCLA's undefeated start puts them firmly in the CFP conversation, and they now sit No. 12 in the AP Top 25 after their upset win over Oregon. They're also 3-0 in Big Ten play, which ties them with Ohio State and Indiana, widely viewed as two of the best teams in the sport.
Next up, UCLA will host Wisconsin on Saturday, followed by games against Michigan State, Nevada, and Minnesota, before closing out the season with Illinois, Michigan, and USC. Those are all winnable games, and Chesney could realistically walk away from his debut season undefeated.
