EXCLUSIVE: Established streaming platform Plex has teamed up with Fandango to allow U.S. users to find showtimes and buy movie tickets as they browse and watch films.
Founded in 2011, Plex offers a suite of streaming options from free, ad-supported live and on-demand programming to transactional VOD. Its discovery and community efforts have enabled the company to hold its own in a streaming world dominated by Roku, Amazon and other large-scale players. It operates in more than 180 countries and has more than 42 million monthly active users.
Fandango has branched out from its origins under current owner Versant, adding general-entertainment streaming and other offerings, but it remains the leading online movie ticket seller.
Especially as moviegoing has rebounded after Covid, a number of streamers have looked to unite the small and big screens in various ways. Roku in 2025 added a “coming soon to theaters” feature to its user experience, but it stopped short of enabling ticket purchases.
Under the partnership, which lit up this week, Plex users in the U.S. will see a Fandango ticketing option on title pages for movies that are currently playing in theaters. The feature lets them click through to Fandango to find showtimes and buy tickets. The integration also includes direct attribution through measurement firm Kochava, which promises to give studios and advertisers greater visibility into how campaigns and audience engagement translate into ticket sales.
As more of streaming has shifted toward advertising over the past few years, with all major streamers except Apple TV making it a major strategic focus, there has also been an increased emphasis on outcomes. In other words, knowing how ads prompt purchase decisions is even more of a brass ring than ever.
The Letterboxd-like community aspect of Plex is a key element in the partnership. More than 45 million users create watchlists, the company says, giving it an advantage in terms of content discovery in a marketplace where average viewers struggle to find films and series of interest.
“Our vision is to make Plex the place where people can discover what to watch, regardless of where that content lives. Fandango lets us extend that experience to all theatrical releases in the U.S., giving fans an easy way to act once they find a movie they want to see,” Scott Olechowski, co-founder and chief product officer of Plex, said in a statement.
“Plex has a unique view into what movie fans are actively considering, from what they’re searching for to what they’re watching across services,” said Jerramy Hainline, EVP of Fandango. “By connecting those discovery signals with Fandango ticketing, we’re making it easier for fans to turn that interest into a trip to the theater, while giving studios and advertisers a more direct, measurable path to ticket sales.”
